Birdhouse Build Guide (Ages 7–10) — 16-Step Companion for the Birdhouse Project Plan
Guided by Squarey · written by Shaun

This guide walks your 7–10 year-old builder through every one of the sixteen steps it takes to turn one 1x4 board into a real wooden birdhouse — with a picture for each step. It's built for families, homeschool groups and shop-class leaders working with hand tools: a miter box, a square, a screwdriver, and a drill that an adult runs for now. Paired with the Project 1 Birdhouse plan (cut list and full-size templates), it lays out who does what, how long each part takes, and how to keep the bench safe from first cut to first bird.

What's inside
- Before you start: who does what (builder vs. grown-up), a two-session time plan, and the safety rules for every build
- Gather your stuff: lumber, hardware and tools checklist, plus printing instructions for the templates
- Meet the parts: a labeled diagram of all twelve pieces and how they lay out on one 8 ft board
- 16 illustrated steps, grouped into Get Ready, Cut, Grown-Up Drilling, Build and Finish
- A drilling checklist for the grown-up's one supervised session
- Uh-oh? Easy fixes: a troubleshooting table for crooked cuts, stripped screws and other common snags
- Building with a group: station setup and supply list for classes, camps and clubs
- A printable Certificate of Building to celebrate the finish
Sample step: marking the peak boards
Step 2 shows your builder how to turn a plain 9-inch blank into the birdhouse's slanted front and back pieces — the first real test of measuring and marking a straight 45° line.

- Measure and mark four 9" blanks along the 1x4.
- On each blank, measure 5-1/2" up one long edge and make a mark.
- Use a square to draw a 45° line from the mark to the opposite top corner.
- Shade the triangle above the line — that part is waste.
- Mark two blanks pointing left and two pointing right: one pair is the front, one pair is the back.
The full guide carries your builder through all sixteen steps — cutting, grown-up drilling, assembly, painting and hanging — plus the troubleshooting page for when a cut goes crooked (it will, and that's fine).
