This is a printable woodworking plan for a wren-and-chickadee birdhouse, built by kids ages 7-10 with hand tools and a miter box. The build takes about 2 hours, or two shorter sessions, with an adult running the drill for the entrance hole and every screw mark. The PDF includes a cut list, shopping list, full-size templates, and step-by-step instructions.

Your builder cuts every piece in a miter box, screws together a slanted-roof birdhouse, and finishes it with a coat of outdoor paint. The front and back each start as two 1x4 boards joined by a single 45-degree cut, so the whole peak comes together without a single power saw in their hands. An adult handles the drilling — the entrance hole, the drain holes, and every screw mark — then your builder drives the screws and watches the house take shape.
It's a flagship first project: real measuring, real angled cuts, and a finished birdhouse to hang in the yard by the end of the build (or after a second session). Along the way they'll learn why skipping the perch keeps the birds safer, and how the small gap under the roof is ventilation, not a mistake.
Just one 8 ft 1x4 pine board plus a small scrap of 1x2 pine at least 4" long — a leftover piece works fine.
No saws. The only power tool is a drill, and an adult runs it for the entrance hole, drain holes, and every screw's pilot hole.
About 2 hours. It splits nicely into two shorter sessions if that fits your family's schedule better.
Ages 7–10. Every cut is made in a miter box by hand, and an adult handles the drill.
No — the plan leaves it off on purpose. Birds don't need a perch, and skipping it helps keep predators away.
Yes. The plan calls for outdoor acrylic paint on the outside only, so it holds up outside.
