Your builder will measure, mark and cut their way to a real tool tote they can carry and use — complete with a smooth dowel handle sized just for kid hands. The peaked ends are cut from 1x4 pine with two 45 degree corners, so every single cut in this project, straight or angled, happens in a standard miter box. No freehand cuts, no rip cuts.
It's a great confidence-builder: short enough to finish in one sitting (about 75–90 minutes), but with real skills packed in — measuring to a mark, clamping the work, cutting a clean 45 degree corner, and driving screws to hold it all together. An adult handles all the drilling (the handle holes, the screw pilot holes) so your builder can focus on measuring and sawing.
When it's done, they'll have a toolbox they built themselves — a little wobbly in the corners, maybe, and all the better for it. Encourage them to sand the handle extra smooth, write their name on an end, and start carrying their own tools.
A 4 ft length each of 1x4 and 1x3 pine, a small scrap of 1x2 pine at least 4" long, a 3 ft length of 3/4" dowel, and 18 screws (#6 x 1-1/4").
No saws are needed beyond the miter box and back saw your builder uses themselves. An adult does the drilling for the handle holes and screw pilot holes.
About 75 to 90 minutes, start to finish.
