About this project

Your builder will measure, cut, and assemble a wall rack with four cup hooks for keys or leashes and a small shelf on top for a phone or wallet. Every cut is a straight 45 or 90 degree cut made in a miter box, so there's no freehand sawing — just steady hands, a clamp, and a plan. It's a quick, satisfying build: in about 45 minutes your builder can measure a board, clip the corners square, sand the pieces, and drive the screws that hold it together, with a grown-up handling the drilling.

Once it's hung at a height everyone in the house can reach, it becomes something the whole family uses every day — a small project with a daily payoff.

Skills you'll practice

  • Measuring and marking a board accurately
  • Making 45 degree corner cuts in a miter box
  • Clamping work safely before cutting
  • Driving screws with a stubby screwdriver
  • Twisting in cup hooks by hand
  • Sanding and finishing a project for display

Questions

How much wood do I need?

A single 1x4 pine piece at least 11 inches long for the backboard, and a 1x3 pine piece at least 11 inches long for the shelf. A scrap works fine for either.

What tools does my builder actually use?

Just hand tools: a miter box with a 45 degree slot, a back saw, a clamp, a tape measure, a stubby screwdriver, and a sanding block.

Where does an adult need to step in?

An adult drills every screw mark (1/8 inch hole plus countersink) and the two mounting holes, then starts each screw so its tip just pokes through, before handing it back to the builder to finish driving.

How long does this project take?

About 45 minutes from measuring the boards to twisting in the last cup hook.

Can my builder paint or decorate it?

Yes, the build steps include decorating after assembly. Use water-based, non-toxic paints and finishes.

Can I use this plan for a scout troop or classroom?

This edition is a Household License for one family's personal use. A Class & Group License edition is available for classes, camps, or clubs.
