Tilt the board, chase the marble from START to FINISH. The Marble Maze is a tray-sized game with a pine frame, square-stick walls and stubs, and a plywood base that doubles as the playing field — the printed template glues on for good and becomes the maze floor, so your builder can color it in before the glue sets.
Every cut in this project is a straight, 90-degree cut made in a miter box — no rip cuts, nothing freehand — which makes it a great early project for building confidence with a saw. A grown-up cuts the plywood base to size and drills every screw mark; your builder measures, marks, and cuts the frame, walls, and stubs, then helps drive the screws from underneath.
It's a short build (about an hour and a quarter), but it's full of repetition: eleven pieces across five part types means plenty of practice measuring and cutting before the glue goes on. Roll the marble along the path before it sets — if it sticks, the fix is to move a wall, not blame the marble.
It's designed for builders ages 7–10. The only power tool involved is a drill, and that step is handled by the grown-up — your builder's cuts are all done by hand in a miter box.
About 75 to 90 minutes, which makes it a nice single-session build.
One 4 ft length of 1x2 pine, one 3 ft length of 1/2" square stick, and one 2 x 2 ft piece of 1/4" plywood, plus #6 and #4 flat-head screws, wood glue, and a 5/8" marble. The plan's shopping list spells out exact totals.
Your builder cuts the frame, wall, and stub pieces in the miter box — 11 pieces across 5 part types. The plywood base is sheet goods, so a grown-up cuts that one to size.
Yes — the plan notes the maze floor template can be colored in before assembly, and any finish you add should be a water-based, non-toxic type.
That's part of learning. The plan's own tip is to roll the marble along the path before the glue sets — if it snags, move a wall, not the marble.
