This is a printable woodworking plan for a shallow box succulent planter, built for kids ages 7-10 using hand tools. The build takes about 45-60 minutes and includes a cut list, full-size templates, and step-by-step instructions. An adult drills the screw and drain holes while the builder measures, cuts, and assembles the box.

About this project

This shallow box planter is the simplest build in the Sawdust Scholars lineup — just five square cuts from one 1x4 board, with no angled cuts at all. It's a great first project for a young carpenter who's new to the miter box, and they come home with something useful: a planter for a succulent or a few herbs on the windowsill.

Your builder measures and marks each part, makes every cut in a miter box, sands the edges smooth, and then drives the screws that hold the box together (after an adult starts them and drills the pilot holes and drain holes). It's a short, satisfying build that fits into a single sitting — by the end of an afternoon, your builder will have something they measured, cut, and screwed together themselves.

Skills you'll practice

  • Measuring and marking straight cuts
  • Cutting square in a miter box
  • Box assembly and squaring up parts
  • Driving screws with a stubby screwdriver
  • Sanding and finishing a small project

Questions

What wood do I need to buy?

Just one 4 ft length of 1x4 pine. The build uses about 2 ft 9-1/8 in of it, with a little extra built in for a practice cut.

Does my builder use any power tools?

No. Every cut is made by hand in a miter box with a back saw. An adult uses a drill for the pilot holes, countersinks, and drain holes.

How long does this project take?

About 45 to 60 minutes, start to finish.

What age is this plan designed for?

Ages 7-10, using hand tools with an adult handling the drilling.

Can we paint the finished planter?

Yes — paint the outside only, using water-based, non-toxic paint. Anything that will touch soil or water should be exterior-rated.

What else do we need besides the plan and lumber?

Twelve #6 x 1-1/4" screws, plus succulent soil and small plants, or gravel and a plastic liner if you'd rather not plant directly in the box.
