Tic-Tac-Toe Board

This is a 45-60 minute hand-tool project for builders ages 7-10. Your young carpenter measures, cuts, and finishes a peg-board tic-tac-toe game with its own peg storage, using only a miter box and hand tools (a grown-up handles the drilling). The PDF includes a cut list, shopping list, full-size templates, and step-by-step build instructions.

About this project

Your builder will measure, saw, and sand their way to a pocket-size tic-tac-toe game — one they can carry to the park or tuck in a drawer. Ten pegs drop into playing holes for X's and O's, and five extra holes on the board store the pieces when the game's packed away. There's no gluing or screwing here: every part is cut in a miter box, and the only power tool is a drill, run by a grown-up, for the playing and storage holes.

This is a great early project — short enough to finish in one sitting, with repeat practice at the same skill (square cuts) on ten identical little pegs. A stop block in the miter box helps keep them all the same length, and a crooked peg still plays just fine.

Skills you'll practice

  • Measuring and marking a board
  • Making square cuts in a miter box
  • Cutting dowels to consistent length
  • Sanding and finishing wood
  • Painting and decorating a finished piece

Questions

How long does this project take?

About 45 to 60 minutes, start to finish.

What wood do I need to buy?

A 1x4 pine board at least 9 inches long (a scrap works) and one 3 ft length of 3/8" dowel.

Does this project use power tools?

The only power tool is a drill, used by a grown-up to make the 19 playing and storage holes. All cutting is done by hand in a miter box.

Does the board need screws?

No. The pegs simply fit into drilled holes, so no screws or glue are needed for this build.

What skills will my builder practice?

Measuring, making square cuts, cutting dowels to length, and finishing the wood.

Can my builder do the cutting without much experience?

Yes. Every cut is a straight 90-degree cut in the miter box, and a stop block can help keep the ten pegs all the same length.
