Wooden Race Car

The Wooden Race Car is a 60-minute hand-tool project for builders ages 7–10, right for a single afternoon at the workbench. Your builder measures, marks, and makes every cut themselves in a miter box, then sands and paints before a grown-up drills the cockpit and wheel holes and the builder assembles the wheels. The plan includes a build sheet, full-size templates, a cut list, and shop notes.

About this project

Starting with one chunky block of 2x4, your builder squares an end, measures out the body, and clips two 45 degree corners in the miter box to shape the nose. No rip cuts, no freehand sawing — every cut runs through the miter box's slot, so it's a great first project for steady, careful practice.

Once the shape is cut, a grown-up drills the cockpit and the four wheel holes. Then it's back to your builder for sanding, painting, and the satisfying part: stacking each wheel onto a screw with a washer on either side so it spins freely, no glue or wobbly dowels required. Add the optional peg-doll driver, and the race car is ready to roll.

It's a short build with a big payoff — your builder will have something they measured, cut, and finished themselves by the end of a single hour.

Skills you'll practice

  • Measuring and marking a board accurately
  • Making 45 degree corner cuts in a miter box
  • Sanding to round sharp edges safely
  • Driving and adjusting screws so parts move (wheel axles)
  • Painting and finishing a wood project

Questions

What wood do I need to buy?

Just a piece of 2x4 at least 8 inches long — a scrap works fine, or buy one 8-foot stud and cut enough for several builds.

Does this project need power tools?

The only power tool is a drill, and a grown-up runs it to make the cockpit hole and the wheel pilot holes. Your builder does every cut by hand in a miter box.

How long does this project take?

About 60 minutes from squaring the first cut to a painted, rolling car.

What age is this project designed for?

It's built for ages 7–10, using hand tools and a miter box, with a grown-up handling the drilling.

Do the wheels really spin?

Yes. Each wheel is stacked on a screw with a washer on either side, then backed off a quarter turn after it's snug, so it spins freely with no glue or dowels needed.
